From Invisible to Invaluable: The Art of Developing a Strong Personal Brand
Borrow strategies from the world of branding to strengthen your professional reputation. Join my session at Medium Day on August 17, 11:00–11:30a EST to learn more.
In my former life as a brand marketer, I used to market things like trash bags, drain openers, luxury desserts, and ice cream to consumers. As someone involved with four brand relaunch campaigns across very different product categories at both small and large companies in the US and UK, one thing became very apparent to me.
Branding matters.
Branding Is Critical to Success
If a company has an amazing product, but you can't find it, you won’t buy it. If a company offers an incredible service, but you haven’t heard about it, you won’t consider it. And if a company creates a superior offering in a crowded marketplace, but fails to communicate what makes it better, you won’t spend extra money on it.
Similarly, suppose you have an impressive professional track record, but fail to capture it clearly on your resume or cover letter when applying for a job. You probably won’t get invited in for an interview. Suppose you’re doing great work within your organization, but no one knows you’ve done that work. You probably won’t get any credit for it. And suppose you’ve written wonderful articles on your blog (or Medium), but you haven’t driven any visibility for those pieces. No one will read them.
Leverage Principles of Branding in Your OwnCareer
It turns out many parallels exist between companies trying to market their products and services to others and professionals trying to market themselves to clients, customers, investors, or hiring managers.
What can you learn from brand marketing to more effectively define who you are and manage your own reputation?
